그런데 이러한 칭찬이 독이 되는 경우가 있다. 바로 칭찬이 상대에게 기쁨을 주는 것이 아니라 부담을 안겨 주는 경우이다. 칭찬을 들으면 그 기대에 부응해야 한다는 압박감 때문에 자신의 실력을 제대로 발휘하지 못하게 되는 일이 생기게 된다. 칭찬의 또 다른 부정적인 면은 칭찬 받고 싶다는 생각에 결과만을 중시하게 되는 점이다. 일반적으로 칭찬이 일의 과정보다 결과에 중점을 두고 행해지는 경우가 많기 때문이다.
