안녕하세요. 토미입니다.
Let’s do our best to learn Korean today!
I will teach you the following grammar.
First, -는 도중에, “while ~ing/ on the way ~/ in the middle of ~”,
Second, -는 길에, “on the way/ while going~,”
and finally, -는 대로, “according to/ just as/ as soon as.”
If you learn today’s grammar, you can say like
당신의 꿈은 말하는 대로 다 이루어집니다.
All your dreams will come true just as you say!
Wow!! It is like a sentence that Genie in a magic lamp would say. Right?
And, since this is the 40th lesson, I have a special gift for you.
Yes, it’s a test. The grammar from the 36th to the 40th lesson will be on the test.
You can make sure of the grammar you have learned so far.
So, give it a try!
And let’s pass TOPIK 2, level 4, and become a super intermediate master!
You will surely achieve it!
그럼 시작할게요!
– 는 도중에
The first grammar, -는 도중에 means
“while ~ing/ on the way ~/ in the middle of ~”
and you attach it to verbs.
You use 도중에 in case when something unexpected happens.
Therefore, 갑자기 “suddenly” comes often with this grammar.
To apply this, you can think about the noun modifier for the present tense of verbs, which is – 는. Therefore, you attach -는 도중에 to a verb stem.
For example,
가다 “to go” will be 가는 도중에 “while (I’m) going.
” 먹다 “to eat” will be 먹는 도중에 “while (I’m) eating.”
For nouns, you attach 도중에 directly.
For example, 이야기 “conversation” becomes 이야기 도중에 “in the middle of a conversation.”
Now, let’s read a sample sentence.
어제는 집에 들어가는 도중에 혼자서 치킨을 사 먹었다.
Yesterday, on my way home, I bought and had chicken alone.
Here, 들어가다 is “to go (home).”
You attach -는 도중에 to the verb stem to make 들어가는 도중에 “on my way home.”
Now, let’s look at the next sentence!
여자친구와 싸우고 있는 도중에 갑자기 회사에서 전화가 왔다.
In the middle of a fight with my girlfriend, I suddenly got a call from the company.
Anyway, 싸우고 있다 means “to (be) fighting.”
You attach 는 도중에 to the stem to make 싸우고 있는 도중에 “while I was arguing.”
Let’s look at the next sample sentence!
롤러코스터가 운행 도중에 멈춰서 사고날 뻔했다
The roller coaster stopped in the middle of an operation and almost caused an accident.
What a dangerous sample sentence it is!!
It makes me nervous when I imagine if I were in the same situation.
Anyway, 운행 “operation” is a noun.
You just attach 도중에 directly.
Therefore, it becomes 운행 도중에 “in the middle of an operation.”
Quiz
Then, let’s deepen our understanding with some quizzes. Which one is the correct answer?
전철을 타고 ( ) 새로운 비즈니스 아이디어가 떠올랐다.
While on the train, a new business idea came to my mind.
(1)가는 도중에 (2) 간 도중에
That was an exciting sample sentence, wasn’t it?
The new business idea!! I love it!
Do you want to know the correct answer?
The correct answer is number one. 가다 is “to go .”
You attach 는 도중에 to make 가는 도중에 “while going.”
In other words, it means “while on the train.”
Number two 간 도중에 is wrong because it is the past tense.
You apply 도중에 with the present tense! So, it’s going to be 는 도중에.
So, don’t forget!
Now, let’s read it together with some excitement!
전철을 타고 (가는 도중에) 새로운 비즈니스 아이디어가 떠올랐다.
While on the train, a new business idea came across my mind.
Please read it while thinking about the new business idea!
Now let’s look at the next quiz!
연극 배우인 그는 ( ) 갑자기 쓰러졌다.
He, a theater actor, suddenly collapsed in the middle of his performance.
(1)연기 도중에 (2) 연기하고 도중에
It’s a shocking sample sentence, isn’t it?
Don’t fall!
Anyway, the correct answer is number one.
연기 “performance” is a noun.
You attach 도중에 directly to make 연기 도중에 “in the middle of (his) performance.”
Number two 연기하고 도중에 is grammatically wrong.
If it was 연기하고 있는 도중에, then it would have been the answer as well.
Now let’s read the correct sentence!
연극 배우인 그는 (연기 도중에) 갑자기 쓰러졌다.
Please read it with a feeling of shock.
– 는 길에
Let’s look at the second grammar! -는 길에 means “on the way/ while going~.”
You can use this grammar for verbs only and apply 는 길에, which is the present tense of a noun modifier.
Let’s compare -는 길에 with -는 도중에 “while -ing.”
While you can apply -는 도중에 to many different verbs, -는 길에, actually has a limited number of verbs that you can use.
These verbs have images of moving from place to place, such as 가다 “to go”, 오다 “to come”, 돌아가다 “to return”, 들어가다 “to enter, to go (home)”, 나오다 “to go out.”
These words are all related to 가다 “to go” or 오다 “to come.”
So, it’s perfect if you just quickly memorize 가는 길 “on the way going,” 오는 길, “on the way coming.”
Now, let’s read a sample sentence.
어제 집에 들어가는 길에 친구와 만나서 한잔했어.
On my way home yesterday, I met a friend for a drink.
Here, 들어가다 means “to go (home).
You add -는 길에 to the stem to make 들어가는 길에 “on my way home.”
Let’s also look at the word 한잔했어.
A cup of drink is called 한잔 in Korean.
So, the direct translation of 한잔하다 is “to do a cup of drink.”
In other words, it means “to drink alcohol.”
Actually, it does not matter if you drink two or three cups of alcohol.
You can still express 한잔하다.
It is an interesting word, isn’t it? It is also surprising to find 한잔하다 as one word in the dictionary.
So, there is no word spacing in this word.
Okay, now let’s look at the next sentence!
I will give you a conversation.
수진아, 지금 어디야?
Sujin, where are you now?
지금 투표하고 나오는 길이에요.
I’m on my way out after voting.
Here, 나오다 is “to go out.” You add 는 길이에요 to the stem to make 나오는 길이에요 “on my way out.”
Quiz
Then, let’s deepen our understanding with some quizzes. Which one is the correct answer?
( ) 편의점에서 푸딩 좀 사오세요.
While going for a walk, please buy some pudding at a convenience store.
(1)산책하러 가는 길에 (2) 산책하던 길에
The correct answer is number one.
Here, 산책하러 가다 means “to go for a walk.
You add -는 길에 to make 산책하러 가는 길에 “while going for a walk.”
Number two 산책하던 길에 is grammatically incorrect.
Because this -는 길에 is expressing an ongoing action.
Therefore, you cannot use it in past tense. OK?
Now let’s read it together!
(산책하러 가는 길에) 편의점에서 푸딩 좀 사오세요.
Please, read it at least three times!
Now let’s look at the next quiz!
아드님은 ( ) 집 앞의 도로에서 교통사고를 당했다고 합니다.
It is said that your son was in a car accident on the road in front of a house on his way home.
(1)귀가하는 길에 (2) 귀가 김에
Traffic accidents are so dangerous. Right?
I hope this kind of accident would not happen to you.
Anyway, the correct answer is number one.
Here, 귀가하다 means “to go home, to return home.”
You add -는 길에 to the stem to make 귀가하는 길에 “on (his) way home.”
Number two, 귀가 김에 is a wrong expression. So, don’t use it!
Now, let’s read it with a feeling of concern!
아드님은 ( 귀가하는 길에 ) 집 앞의 도로에서 교통사고를 당했다고 합니다.
Please, practice expressing your sadness.
– 는 대로
The last grammar, -는 대로, has two meanings.
The first meaning is “as soon as.”
You use it to express when you do something as soon as you finish the other action.
You can also use this as the present tense of a noun modifier.
So, it becomes 는 대로.
For example,
가다 “to go” will be 가는 대로 “as soon as I go.
” 먹다 “to eat” will be 먹는 대로 “as soon as I eat.”
The second meaning is “according to ~/ as ~.”
For verbs, the present tense of a noun modifier is -는 대로, while the past tense is (으)ㄴ 대로.
To give a future meaning, you might think (으)ㄹ 대로.
However, you use the present tense for the future.
So it is going to be -는 대로.
Oh, this part was a little bit tricky, wasn’t it?
Finally, for nouns, you add 대로 directly.
For example,
계획 “a plan” becomes 계획대로 “according to a plan.”
And we often use the expression 그대로, which 그 “it” and 대로 “as” are combined to make “as it is.”
This is a phrase, so remember the whole thing!
Now, let’s read a sample sentence.
회사에 도착하는 대로 다시 전화 드리겠습니다.
I will call you back as soon as I get to the office.
It sounds like a trustworthy businessman, doesn’t it?
This is such a good business phrase.
Here, 도착하다 means “to arrive, to get to ~.”
You add -는 대로 to the stem to make 도착하는 대로 “as soon as I get to.”
Here is the next sample sentence.
변명하지 말고 부장님 지시하는 대로 하세요.
Don’t make excuses and just do as your manager instructs you to do.
This is a sample sentence that could be used for new employees.
Here, 지시하다 means “to instruct.”
You add 는 대로 to make 지시하는 대로 “as (your manager) instructs.”
Now, let’s look at the last sentence!
예상대로 그 선수는 이번 경기에 출장하지 못 했군요.
As expected, the player did not play in this match.
This is an expression that you could use in commentary on a competition.
Here, 예상 “expectation” is a noun, so you add 대로 to make 예상대로 “as expected.”
Quiz
Then, let’s deepen our understanding with some quizzes.
Which one is the correct answer?
오늘은 몸이 안 좋아서 이 수업이 ( ) 바로 집에 갈 거예요.
I’m not feeling well today, so as soon as this class is over, I will go home.
(1)끝나는 대로 (2) 끝나고 대로
The correct answer is number one.
끝나다 is “to be over.” You add -는 대로 to make 끝나는 대로 “as soon as (the class) is over.”
Number two, 끝나고 대로 is grammatically wrong.
So, don’t use it!
Now let’s read it together!
오늘은 몸이 안 좋아서 이 수업이 (끝나는 대로) 바로 집에 갈 거예요.
You can tell the other person that you are not feeling well.
Now let’s look at the next quiz!
내 사업은 내가 ( ) 잘 되었다.
My business worked out just as I thought it would.
(1)생각 대로 (2) 생각한 대로
The correct answer is number two.
You change 생각하다 “to think” into the past tense and it becomes 생각한 대로 “as (I) thought.”
Number two 생각 대로 is wrong because 내가 “I” is in front of the sentence. Therefore, 내가 생각한 대로 flows naturally.
Now let’s read it together!
내 사업은 내가 (생각한 대로) 잘 되었다.
I wish I could say something like this someday!
Anyway, don’t forget to read it three times!
Homework
Today, I will introduce you to a famous Korean song, which has today’s grammar, -는 대로.
I will sing a song for you.
말하는 대로 말하는 대로
될 수 있다곤 믿지 않았지
믿을 수 없었지마음먹은 대로 생각한 대로
할 수 있단 건 거짓말 같았지
고개를 저었지
As I say, as I say
I didn’t believe it could be
I couldn’t believe it
As I made up my mind, as I thought
It was like a lie to say I could
I shook my head
I love this lyric. 대로 was everywhere here, right?
말하는 대로 “as I say,” 마음먹은 대로 “as I made up my mind,” 생각한 대로 “as I thought.”
You use this grammar like this. OK?
Now, I will announce today’s homework!
There are two homework assignments.
First, compose three sentences using today’s grammar.
For the first sentence, try to use -는 도중에 “while ~ing/ on the way ~/ in the middle of ~.”
For example,
경기를 보는 도중에 갑자기 우리 엄마가 저를 불렀어요.
In the middle of watching the game, my mother suddenly called me.
For the second sentence, try to use -는 길에 “on the way/ while going~.”
For example,
저는 항상 역에 가는 길에 편의점에서 우롱차를 사요.
I always buy some oolong tea in a convenience store on my way to the station.
For the third sentence, try to use -는 대로 “according to/ just as/ as soon as.”
For example,
한국어로 회화할 때 항상 배운 대로 말하려고 노력해요.
When speaking in Korean, I always try to speak as I have learned.
That’s a good way of practicing Korean conversation, right?
The second homework is to memorize new words.
Please memorize the forty words from number 1561 to number 1600 on page 20 in the intermediate vocabulary list.
There is a vocabulary quiz of forty words on my website, so just feel free to try it.
